There’s many different claims for the humble t-shirt’s origins. They first appeared in the early 1900s worn by US servicemen in the army and navy. Although most would agree that the name t-shirt is derived from their shape, there are even arguments about this. Some say that ‘training shirts’ is the original as they were worn by soldiers in training, others even claim that tee is short for ‘amputee’ in reference to the short sleeves.

It seems improbable now, but in the past it would have been considered shocking to see someone in public wearing a t-shirt as an overshirt. Not until after WWII was the t-shirt accepted as such.
They really became popular and considered fashionable after cult figures like James Dean and Marlon Brando wore them on the big screen.
Now the t-shirt is one of the most ubiquitous forms of clothing and probably the most worn garment on the planet.
